Tale of a City : Berlin, from Division to Reunification

First Day:

Lecture/Presentation:

The module will cover brief history of Berlin as the backdrop, starting  from it's early beginnings,  it's later journey, the 19th century developments,  the World War I and moving on to the Third Reich Berlin i.e. Berlin under the Nazi regime.

The module will highlight the developments towards the end of World War II which lead to the division of  not only Germany but also of Berlin into two halves.

The 1948-49 Berlin Blockade resulting into Berlin Airlift typified the face-off situations between the Eastern Block and the Western Block in the Cold War era and are considered as milestone events in the Berlin history. The module will focus on the backdrop which led to construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. This is considered as a key event of not only the Berlin History but of the modern International History as well. What was once one people, one city and one country had been turned into two different worlds referred to as the First World and the Second World. The Berlin Wall not only divided the families and friends,  it came to represent division of the civilized human race internationally into the Capitalist and the Communist blocks. The module will bring into focus the contrasting ways of life across the Wall.

If division of Berlin was dramatic it's unification was even more dramatic. The module will highlight the important political developments of the period that lead to fall of the Berlin Wall and, thus, clearing the way for the unification of not only Berlin but entire Germany as well.
